Kev: Hello everyone this is Kevin and with me is...
Zk: Hello everyone, I’m Zheki
Kev: How are you today?
Zk:Today I feel a little tired because I just came here from work
Kev:What time did you finish working?
Zk: at about 5:30 and then came here by subway
Kev: is your workplace very far from here?
Zk:I work in honggutan, the twin towers
Kev: so you took the subway all the way here, thank you for coming
Zk: Thank you for coming too. So Kevin do you know today is a special day in China.
Kev: Really? Why? Is it your birthday?
ZK: No, today is the collage entrance exam day. Today many students take their first important entrance examination
Kev: Oh, I didn't know that. So how many days? only today?
ZK: two days, today and tomorrow, they will have four examinations.
Kev: It sounds very important. Were you nervous when you took yours?
ZK: Yeah, I felt a little bit nervous because before the examination I didn't feel good about my grades, my math grades weren't that great, so I felt nervous.
Kev: How did it go? Were you nervous while taking the exam?
ZK: It is interesting that during the exam I felt very comfortable. I think there is no need to be nervous
Kev: Yeah, you just have to do your best
Zk: at the end I did ok
Kev: So do you have any younger brothers or sisters who have to take the exam?
Zk:Yeah my little brother will attend the exam and since he is not very good at studying he is probably not that nervous.
Kev: Isn't it funny that usually good students feel very nervous and students who aren't as good don't worry that much
ZK:students always think too highly of the exam.
Kev: Yes, they think if they don't pass they might fail in life, at least he has no stress right?! So Zheki can you tell us what is the topic for today?
Zk: Today will talk about family love.
Kev: You told me you have a little brother right?!
ZK: yes, but he is not my parent’s son
Kev: so he is like your cousin
ZK: Yes, he is my cousin. I am an only child. So you know the relationship between me and my parents is very complicated
Kev: Why do you think so?
Zk:Because I'm an only child, my parents and grandparents pay too much attention to me and don't want me to live very far away from them. If I lived near them I could go back home to see them very easily if i live very far it wont be that easy.
Kev: It makes sense. How old are your parents?
Zk: They are not very old, my mother is on her 40s and my father is on his 50s, but my grandparents are very old, they are on their 80s so because my grandparents raised me my grandparents think I'm their little daughter and really love me, they don't want me to live far from them, if I don't come home in two weeks they ask me when am I coming home
Kev: I think you have more pressure than say me, I have five brothers and three sisters, growing up my parents payed attention to me obviously but there were a lot of children to pay attention to.
Zk: So do you miss your parents and siblings now that you are far away from them?!
Kev:I came to China when I was 18-19, I lost my mom when I was 14, so when I came to china I missed my father a lot. Growing up I was very close to my father. Coming to China was very weird because I didn't have my brothers and sisters here or even my father so I had to get use to being here by myself. China is very far from my country so I couldn't go home every two weeks. Is your home here in Nanchang?
ZK: No, my hometown is a little county near Nanchang, Yichun fengxin.
Kev: I know that place
Zk: You know it?!
Kev: I used to teach high school there.
ZK: what high school?
Kev: Fengxin first high school and you know they have a middle school too. They told me it is the same school just a different part, so I taught there too. Around two years ago. I used to take the bus for four hours, oh no, Fengxin was closer, 1.5h. I used to go to another city too. I worked for a company that sends teachers to high schools. The students were incredibly smart, I was very impressed.
Zk: so did you have a good time there
Kev: Yes I did. Especially at the middle school, for some reason the middle school students seemed more interested in english, they would participate more, they would try to learn new words. It was very fun to teach them and I was very sad when I had to leave them.
Zk:In my first or second high school year there was an english camp, some foreigners came to our school and taught us for 5 days, when they left I was very sad.
Kev: I think it’s because we have a lot of fun and at the same time when you realize the students are interested in learning it makes you want to teach more. when I spent all that time with them and then had to leave It made me very sad
ZK: Are you going to see them again?
Kev: Probably not. I used to see them once a week and since I live far from them it’s not convenient to go back. I was very surprised by how hardworking they are. They have classes from morning to night and they would always be there, wouldn’t even skip classes.
ZK: The Chinese students are hard-workers
Kev: And usually they are very worried about this day, they spent so much time studying and they might lose everything they were trying to achieve on one day, just because of a bad test.
ZK: I spent this day thinking about this, my parents have high expectations for my exams, they think I need good grades to enter a good university, thats the right path for me, so when I was a student I felt a lot of pressure. After the exam my parents changed, they don't talk about exams anymore. Our relationship improved a lot.
Kev: Parents always want the best for their children, if they think that by getting into a good college you’ll have a better future they will probably push you to study hard
ZK: My college life isn't that good. I used to be very shy and had no selfesteem, at that time I thought I couldn't do anything, just stayed in my room and watched movies, didn't go out with my country-mates, didn't meet a lot of people. My college yeas are a blank. I think the college years should be the most colorful years of your life. It is a pity
Kev: The good thing is you have noticed that so now you can do something to change. I actually spent one year, a school year, I wouldn't speak at school, not a word. I had a speech impediment. I was made fun of constantly so for a whole year I didn't speak at school. That way nobody would make fun of me. I would go to class sit there listen and take notes. After school my parents would come pick me up. After a while I realized how miserable I was because I didn't talk to anybody and I didn't make any friends because I was too afraid of being made fun of. I wasted a whole year of my life. After realizing that I decided to be more open. You might have wasted a year of your life but you learned something.
Zk: Yeah I think thats very important. The experience made me change a lot. Now Im more clear about my life. In the future I will enjoy my life more.
Kev: It’s been very nice to have you here Zheki, do you have anything else to tell us before we finish?
Zk: Enjoy the weekend
Kev: Yes, enjoy the weekend and have a great night.
